City officials looking to hire Parks and Recreation Director

The City of Arkadelphia is looking to hire a new director for its Parks and Recreation department.

The search comes at the departure of current director, Junior Rodemeyer, who has accepted a recreation job closer to home.

“Junior has been an invaluable member of our team,” City Manager Gary Brinkley said. “He transformed our Parks and Recreation department by updating and improving park facilities, and creating sustainable programs for kids and adults alike. We wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

Job Summary

Provides leadership, direction, general administrative oversight, development, and operation of the Arkadelphia Parks & Recreation Department, Maintenance Department, and Aquatic Park. Responsible for work in planning and implementing programs designed to benefit the citizens of Arkadelphia both physically, socially, and mentally. Work with Arkadelphia Parks, and Recreation Advisory Committee in developing recommendation for rules and policies for programs and parks in order to meet the desire of the general public.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITES

  • Administers the overall operation of the Parks & Recreation Department and Aquatic Park.
  • Plans for current and long-range development of Parks and Recreation programs.
  • Prepares the annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Maintains financial records, revenues, and expenses within the Parks & Recreation Department and Aquatic Park.
  • Directs maintenance in parks and Aquatic Park.
  • Directs staff concerning department policies, procedures, and best practices methods for the operation of programs and parks.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Keeps abreast of the latest information in the parks and recreation field by being involved in the state professional organization.

GENERAL ACTIVITIES

  • Prepares grants for improvements to facilities and the creation/ innovation of programs.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of the city pool.
  • Supervises the maintenance and operation of all parks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Ability to drive a standard-size vehicle in order to supervise and coordinate work and activities being performed in the parks and in various programs.
  2. Possess the mental ability to gather information and analyze facts in order to plan and identify problems within the operation of the Parks & Recreation Department.
  3. Ability to present and communicate ideas concerning Parks & Recreation clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  4. Possess the ability to remain calm in public disagreements and disturbances in order to resolve disagreements with appropriate tact and procedures.
  5. Conduct must be becoming of an employee working with youth and the public.
  6. Sets a good moral example at all times while employed for the City both during working hours and after working hours.
  7. Ability to organize special events, leagues, and other programs.
  8. Understand pool operations; mechanical, chemical and operational.
  9. Knowledge of proper public safety rules and procedures.

Physical Characteristics

  1. Ability to speak efficiently in front of the public.
  2. Use of hands and fingers to write, operate keyboards, and grasp tools/ equipment.
  3. See well enough to read fine print and numbers without error or transposition; corrective lens acceptable.
  4. Hear well enough to respond to verbal communication; hearing aid acceptable.

Other Qualifications

  1. Possess a valid Arkansas Drivers License.
  2. Undergraduate degree in Parks and Recreation, Physical Education, or related field.
  3. Three years of experience in a supervisory capacity in Parks and Recreation management.
  4. Preferred a Certified Leisure Professional (CPL) in Arkansas or be capable of passing theCLP test within one year.
